The cancellations begin at eight in the evening on Saturday and remain active until further notice, according to Civil Protection directives.

A cultural network on high alert

The Gran Teatre del Liceu has cancelled the performance of’Aida scheduled for this Saturday, as well as the performance of The Young Aida scheduled for Sunday. The Palau de la Música Catalana has also had to cancel the Tribute to Dire Straits de Sultans of Swing, one of the most anticipated musical events of the season. At the’Auditorium, the activities of the day Toca Festa were maintained until six in the evening, and the performance The Colors of Brass continues, but both the Orchestra Tasting de la OBC on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning have been suspended. The Museum of Music remains closed until Sunday at two in the afternoon.

Among the concerts scheduled for Saturday afternoon that have been forced to be suspended, the performance of Placebo to Sant Jordi Club and the concert of’Hombres G to Palau Sant Jordi. Performing arts proposals scheduled for outdoor spaces have also been cancelled, such as the circus show The neighbor on the balcony, which was to be held in a location in the center of the city of Barcelona.

Progressive reopening and safety protocol

The authorities have indicated that the reopening of cultural spaces will be carried out in a progressive manner and always under the supervision of Civil Protection teams, who continue to monitor the evolution of the meteorological phenomenon. The heavy rains, accumulated over the last few hours, have generated inundacions in various coastal and inland areas, with a risk of flash floods and rising river levels.

From the point of view of cultural management, this massive suspension represents a serious setback for late autumn programming, with significant economic losses for production companies, artists, and venues. The Catalan cultural sector, which is already going through times of crisis following the consequences of the pandemic, sees a new obstacle standing in the way of recovering active normalcy. It should be remembered that the Ministeri de Cultura has recently unlocked another 20 million for Barcelona's cultural capital status, an initiative that now faces the reality of an increasingly unpredictable climate. The Coordinating Committee of Human Tower Builders has also demanded that the Parliament give popular culture its own voice in the new law on cultural rights, a demand that gains weight in times of crisis like the current one.

Attendees of the suspended shows have been notified via social media and email, and the venues have set up protocols for refund or ticket exchange for the new dates. The Generalitat keeps the emergency protocol activated and recommends that citizens avoid unnecessary travel and follow the instructions of local emergency services.

With the weather forecast indicating that rainfall could continue over the next few hours, the Catalan cultural scene remains in a state of expectation. The decision to suspend all activities responds to a criterion of extreme precaution, aware that the safety of citizens and professionals in the sector is the absolute priority in situations of this type. The Museum of Music, for example, has announced that it will reopen on Sunday at noon, but everything depends on the evolution of the weather conditions.

In a context where culture seeks to consolidate itself as a fundamental pillar of Catalan identity —as defended by artists like Aitana, who has defended Catalan as an essential pillar of Catalonia—, this massive suspension highlights the vulnerability of the sector to increasingly intense natural phenomena. The next few hours will be key to determining whether cultural activities can resume on Sunday or if new counties will be added to the list of suspended ones.

También te puede interesar:

El Ministeri de Cultura desbloqueja 20 milions més per a la «capitalitat cultural» de Barcelona

Jordi Clos, new honorary academician of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi

Red alert for torrential rain suspends cultural activities in 20 counties, including the Liceu and concerts by Placebo and Hombres G.
