A Horizon of Renewal for Poblet: 17.1 Million for the Safeguarding of a World Treasure

Un Horitzó de Renovació per a Poblet: 17,1 Milions per a la Salvaguarda d'un Tresor Mundial

From the depths of history and the stillness that define its existence, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, Cistercian jewel and World Heritage Site, prepares for an unprecedented transformation. In a move that marks a turning point for the conservation and projection of its priceless legacy, the Royal Board of Trustees of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet has given the green light to an ambitious project: the Master Plan 2026-2036. This comprehensive initiative, framed within the broader project Relaunch Poblet 2026-2030, not only promises a substantial investment of 1 million euros, of which 4 million will be allocated to immediate actions until 2030, but also reaffirms the commitment to guaranteeing the continuity of monastic life, silence and spirituality that are the soul of this monumental complex. Last Thursday, the decisive meeting of the Board of Trustees outlined the main lines of a shared vision, where the protection of heritage and its public projection go hand in hand with deep respect for the sacredness of the site, a cross-cutting condition that will permeate every action.

This strategic plan stands as the fundamental instrument for holistically organizing conservation, the uses of space, cultural programming, the symbiotic relationship with its natural environment and a modernized management model. The Generalitat de Catalunya, in a strategic alliance with the monastic community, will lead the implementation of this major project, which not only seeks to revitalize the physical structures, but also to enhance the cultural and spiritual dimension of Poblet for future generations. It is a decisive commitment to a model that integrates material safeguarding with the perpetuation of a thousand-year-old lifestyle and way of thinking, making the monastery not just a historical monument, but a living center of culture and spirituality.

A Strategic Investment for the Heart of the Monastery and its Surroundings

The Master Plan 2026-2036 focuses on five interconnected areas of action: patrimoni, natura, culture and thought, promotion i management. This multidimensional approach ensures that every aspect of the monastery and its surroundings is addressed with the utmost attention and rigor. Within the framework of this plan, key tools will be developed, such as a detailed use plan, a museological and museographic plan that will redefine the visitor experience, an investment program with clear milestones, preventive maintenance and restoration protocols, and a comprehensive accessibility plan. In addition, special emphasis will be placed on managing the values that earned Poblet its designation as a World Heritage Site, ensuring that its essence is preserved and communicated effectively.

The tender file for the Master Plan is expected in the near future, with the final drafting scheduled for 2027, with the active and indispensable participation of the monastic community. The use plan has already identified thirteen priority intervention areas, ranging from the renaturalization of the parking lot, to better integrate it into the landscape, to the restoration and enhancement of iconic spaces such as the Museum and Palace of Martí l'Humà, el Ice Well, the former schools, the historic cellars, a new educational space, and the New Abbot's Palace. This set of actions represents an investment of 8 million euros, dedicated to recovering and enhancing the functionality and historical value of every corner of the complex.

Structural Rehabilitation and Cultural Projection: The Pillars of the Future

The Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage of the Department of Culture has drawn up a comprehensive technical program for conservation and restoration, which diagnoses existing damage, establishes intervention priorities, and allocates a budget of 28 million euros for actions between 2026 i 2028. The most urgent interventions include the structural consolidation of the vault of the church's central nave, addressing dampness issues on the facade and west wall, improving the watertightness of the Abbot's Palace and the removal of architectural barriers in key areas such as the cloister, the church, the chapter house and the Museum. The diagnosis highlights two critical areas: the structural stability and architectural pathologies of the main church, and the imperative need to improve accessibility for the monastic community and all visitors.

Beyond physical restoration, the project positions Poblet as a top-tier cultural and heritage destination, strongly linked to the Cistercian Route and to its impressive natural environment, the Poblet Natural Site i les Prades Mountains. The proposal is structured on three scales: the monastery itself and its grounds, the Cistercian Route as a backbone for cultural tourism, and the vast natural landscape surrounding it. This is accompanied by a cultural programme with its own identity, which will include temporary exhibitions, enriching activities linked to the’Montserrat Tarradellas i Macià Archive and the creation of a future Summer University. The details of these projects and their final schedule will be established within the framework of the Master Plan and annual action plans. This initiative aligns with Catalonia's general effort to boost its cultural capital status, providing its centers of excellence with resources.

The Generalitat de Catalunya, with the active participation of the Board of Trustees and the monastic community, will drive the execution of this project, which foresees the reactivation of the governing bodies of the Royal Board of Trustees and the establishment of the necessary oversight instruments to guarantee transparency and efficiency. Furthermore, the project contemplates the progressive creation of a professional team dedicated exclusively to management, product and service development, thus ensuring long-term sustainability and the maximum projection of Poblet as an international cultural and spiritual benchmark. This vision for the future not only preserves the past, but also builds a dynamic present and future for one of Catalonia's most cherished treasures.
